Genshin Impact - A Guide of All Things To Start The Game Right

ALSO SEE: Genshin Impact F2P Elite Boss Guide For Any Party

Introduction

For beginners and new players to Genshin Impact that want to get the most out of the game and want to make sure you aren't missing anything or doing anything wrong, this article is for you. Also, this game is completely free to play friendly, so even if you don't get 5 star characters or weapons, you can play through the game just fine.

IF YOU DO WANT TO SPEND MONEY, buy the Blessing of the Welkin Moon (monthly pass) in shop and the battle pass at Adventure Rank 20. Then pull Wish/Gacha accordingly based on the recommended items and characters in this guide.

Let's Get Started

First you will want to bookmark this guide for future reference. Also, see this incredible interactive map made by the Genshin Impact community for those of you looking to explore and collect things such as Anemoculus, Geoculus and other things. (You'll need this later in the game)

GO THROUGH EACH SECTION CAREFULLY

  1. Should you reroll and start new accounts to get the characters or weapons you want.

  2. What are the best characters and who to level?

  3. What are the best team compositions?

  4. What element combinations should I use the most?

  5. Which weapon should I use and level up?

  6. Is cooking important and what should you cook?

  7. Food, flowers and rocks everywhere, do you need it?

  8. Gensis Crystals (Top-Up Currency and Primogems - what to spend it on?

  9. What is Masterless Stardust and Masterless Starglitter in my currency bar?

  10. My health is low and my other characters are dead, what do I do?

  11. How do I play multiplayer?

  12. Can I increase my maximum stamina?

  13. What is Original Resin (Energy to entry) and how do I manage it? (Coming soon)

  14. Progression Guide (Coming soon - For now just play through the main story!)

1. Should you re-roll and start new accounts to get the characters or weapons you want

First, what exactly is reroll? Basically a way to cheat the game by continuously making new accounts. When you hit adventure rank 5 in the game (about 20-25 minutes of speed play) you are given 10 free rolls which you can then use on one of the gacha (gambling) banners to get characters and weapons. At adventure rank 7, you will get 1760 free Primogems (essentially another 10 pulls then at adventure rank 10, you'll get another 10 free pulls

SO SHOULD YOU RE-ROLL OR NOT?!

The short answer is no, because you can breathe through the game no problem with the characters and items given to you from the game without ever having to touch the gacha system. Also, the % for a 5 star character and weapon is ultra low, some people have spent 6+ hour doing this without getting anything.

However, if you want a specific character or want to get a 5 star weapon to give your early game a bit of ease, then yes you can definitely reroll. Try to get a Venti (5 star) and/or Fiscl (4 star) as these 2 fit into almost every team comp.

Which Banner To Pull?

Whether you re-roll or not all players will get free pulls:

  • Your first pull should be on the beginner's wish banner because it only costs 8 Acquaint Fate (Wish Currency) and gives you a guaranteed Noelle (4* Tank/DPS).

  • Then you can either pull the Venti banner (If you want venti - useful for mobility) otherwise I recommend pulling the Wanderlust Invocation banner to try and get Diluc and Fischl or a 5 star weapon.

2. What are the best characters and who to level?

**Pro Tip: only level, ascend and invest in the characters you want to play for the long haul.**

***ANOTHER PRO TIP FOR YOU PEOPLE WORRIED ABOUT NOT GETTING 5 STARS***

There's something called constellation for each character in this game (these are upgraded stats/skills for each character as you get/pull duplicates of the same character) So it's way easier to get a full constellation upgrade for your 4 star characters than a 5 star, meaning a full constellation 4 star will be way better than a 0 star constellation 5 star.

Character list as of latest patch

Remember the META in this game is get 1 good DPS and the rest are supports (either through elemental reactions or their role (such as healer)) ALSO, to pick your main DPS, you will want to see what playstyle you feel most comfortable with. (Bow, sword, tank, mage)

DPS Classes (Choose 1 of these - based on who you pull or not pull)

  • Diluc (Highest DPS in the game and can have a flame buff to his sword)

  • Fischl (Must have character in game, she works well as both DPS and support)

  • Chongyun (Amazing DPS but also by far the Cryo DPS class in game)

  • Keqing (Overall great DPS with versatile melee and range combat)

  • Mona (Great mobility, combine her with Lisa for the ultimate Monalisa combo)

  • Razor (Has a skill that gives him an additional buff)

  • Xiangling (Xiangling is given to you for free, she works well as both DPS and support)

  • Main Character Male (Since he does well with all elements, it makes him quite a versatile DPS)

  • Jean (Well rounded DPS with fast attacks, CC and group heal)

Support Classes (Even if you don't get them, it's not the end of the world, all characters can act as support)

  • Fischl (Her summon Oz is very overpowered for creating elemental reactions)

  • Barbara (Free healer given to you by the game, why not?)

  • Qiqi (Best healer in the game but she's a 5 star)

  • Venti (Has a very broken mobility skill to fly into high places even in dungeons)

  • Xiangling (Like Fischl she has a pet that can stay in battle while she's put away)

3. What are the best team compositions.

**Quick Note : These builds do not need to be followed precisely. If you're missing a character in the build such as Qiqi (healer), replace her with another healer such as Barbara (healer) who is free if you get to AR 20.**

IF

  • You want the most OP team: Get Diluc (5 star), Xiangling (4 star), Fischl (4 star) and Venti (4 star)

  • If you're going for a META team, find one of the DPS in the screenshot above, get Fischl and Xiangling as supports for their summons, lastly Venti for mobility or Barbara/Qiqi for heals.

  • You want to be strong but no RNG luck with 5 stars, go for the electro build (in screenshot above) with Razor (4 star) as main DPS and replace Qiqi with Barbara (4 star) who you will get for free if you get to adventure rank 20 before patch 1.1 goes live.

  • Alternative to no RNG luck, Mona as main DPS, Lisa as main support if you don't have Fischl, and use whoever else you got.

  • Alternative #2 to no RNG luck, Use Xiangling (Free) as main DPS, and use 3 ranged/mage support.

  • Alternative #3 to no RNG luck, Use Fischl as main DPS, and use Lisa, Barbara and Xiangling as support.

  • The sustainable never die build, Noelle or Jean as main DPS, Fischl and Xiangling as support DPS for their summons and Barbara as healer.

  • You could care less but just want to go through the game, use the free characters given to you by the game and whoever else you want, just make sure you the characters have some synergy to create elemental effects. (See section 4)

Also, you should understand the importance of why a good team composition is necessary. First reason is because you will actually know who to spend resources in levelling up. Second reason is because you will need certain elemental combinations to get through the game. (See section 3) Third reason is because you need a good mixture of ranged and melee with DPS, heal and support.

TBH, don't worry too much your team comp at the beginning, just play through the game with what you have and get a sense of what playstyle you enjoy the most. Once you are adventure rank 20ish, you can start to optimise your comp through elemental combinations and resonance etc. (Bookmark this guide and refer back to it when that time comes)

WITH ALL THAT SAID, you can really get through the game with any 4 character team comp that has a decent blend of elements and range, you'll just have to work a bit harder during combat if it's not a META build (like the ones in the above screenshot).

4. What element combinations should I use the most?

Once again, there are no straight forward answers to this. It really depends on who you want to use as a main character and what their element is. Some element reactions are quite universal and can get you through the game like Melt and Super Conduct while other elemental reactions will have scenario specific usages such as Crystallize. No matter who you pick as a main DPS, always have a support class with the same element as your main DPS for the amazing elemental resonance bonuses (Buffs corresponding to the elemental types which are present in the party)

In my personal opinion, Melt, Superconduct, and Overload are the best for earlier game. As you get closer to end game, Vaporize, can be added into the mix.

Elemental Resonance

When you have 2 of the same elements in your party, you will get some extra buffs. Using Impetuous Wind is good for exploring around the map and Fervent Flame is great for combat if your main DPS is fire based.

5. Which weapon should I use and level up?

Yes a 4 star weapon can carry you through the entire game no problem

Just like characters in Genshin Impact, weapon stars are based on rarity and not strength. HOWEVER, higher star weapons will have higher scaling. A 5 star level 20 sword, may have double the damage as a 3 star level 20 sword. However, a level 5 and level 4 weapon only has about a 10%-15% difference so if you don't want to wait around for a 5 star, a 4 star is just as good to get through the game. (Also, 4 star weapons can be forged as well as found through gacha/wish whereas 5 star weapons can only come from gacha/wish)

Recommendation: Don't level up any weapons until you can find a 4 or 5 star with the bonus stats that fits your build/team comp. Also, focus on levelling up the weapon of your main character or DPS first before the support characters. (When levelling gear, make sure to use up your 1 star materials, then 2 then 3, etc.)

Here are some recommendations for end game weapon selections (only applies if you have these characters and want to pull for these weapons, otherwise just use a 4 star weapon that you think would be best)

Diluc/Chongyun - Wolf's Gravestone (+40% normal attack and increases attack by 80% for him and allies to enemies with less than 30% HP)

Fischl - Stringless Bow (increases elemental skill and burst damage by 48% and procs electro waves)

Qiqi - The Flute (More damage dealt, more HP healed)

Xiangling - Dragon's Bane (Does 40% more damage to enemies affected by Pyro and Hydro)

6. Is cooking important and what should you cook?

Yes absolutely, collect as many of it as possible. You will need it for cooking, character ascension, forging and other things later in the game.

8. Gensis Crystals (Top-Up Currency and Primogems - what to spend it on?

  • You can spend primogems on acquaint fate/intertwined fate to perform wishes(gacha).

  • You can spend primogems on limited items in the mall (if you need it)

  • You can spend primogems on Original risen(energy) to enter dungeons.

I would personally spend it to pull more gacha/wish and find my waifus/husbandos with some awesome 5 star weapons!

You can get Primogems from:

  • Top-up to buy Genesis Crystals and convert them to Primogems (Think Bound vs unbound Diamonds in other games)

  • Monthly card and Battle Pass (Paid)

  • Commissions (Dailies)

  • Gifts

  • Spiral Abyss

  • Special Events

You get StarDust and StarGlitter as you use the wish system, these are currency that you can use in your shop for different items such as more Interwined fate and Acquaint Fate to pull wish. There are limits to how many things you can buy with stardust and glitters every month.

  1. Open the Shop menu

  2. Click on Paimon's Bargains

  3. Select the Starglitter Exchange and Stardust Exchange tabs

10. My health is low and my other characters are dead, what do I do?

To revive a character, just make and use a Tayvat Fried Egg. There are three ways to heal in Genshin Impact, eat food, have a healer in your party or use a Statue of the Seven that's spread out around the map.

11. How Do I Play Multiplayer?

There will be a Co-Op mode for up to 4 players once you reach adventure rank 16. Keep in mind there will be limitations to Co-Op mode and you won't be able to play the main story. Also understand the loot system impact on guest vs host players. (see more here)

12. Can I increase my maximum stamina?

Yes by a lot. Follow this map and look for the Anemoculus. Collect these and offer them to the Statue of the Seven to boost your Stamina and other stats.,
