Pokemon Unite Upcoming MOBA - Will it live up to the hype? Everything You Need to Know

Introduction

Pokémon Unite has received a lot of mixed feedback from the Pokémon and gaming community since its announcement back in June. In this article, we will be covering how the game stands as of late 2020 and what players should really expect. Pokémon Unite is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA similar to League of Legends of DOTA) and is being developed by TiMi Studios and published by Tencent. The game is currently being developed as cross platform title for iOS, Android and Nintendo Switch with a placeholder global release date of Spring 2021.

Gameplay

We have seen many clones of League of Legends and DOTA in the last few years, while some were good, others bad, they all tried to go for the same formula. This is where Pokémon Unite shines above the rest because although it is a 5v5 MOBA, a lot of the game mechanics and victory requirements are unique. Each game will work as the following:

  • Two teams of five players will fight each other in real life on a live open map.

  • Each player will choose a Pokemon as their character for the match.

  • All Pokemon are balanced in power, not one has an advantage over another. (For example if you are a lightning Pokemon, you won't have an advantage over a water Pokemon)

  • Teams with the most points at the end of each round will win (It does not require you to destroy a nexus or town hall to win)

  • Points are earned by finding wild Pokemon around the map and capturing them then depositing them at your base.

  • Each player can keep the opposing player from scoring by defeating them. Usually teams should have assigned attackers and collectors.

  • As players defeat wild Pokemon, they will gain exp.

  • Once you've collected enough exp, you can evolve (Level 5 will be first evolution, Level 7 will be second evolution if the Pokemon has a 2nd form) and get new skills (choose between short range, long range and unite skills) to fight with.

  • At level 9, you will get a Unite move (aka ultimate move)

  • At level 11, 13 and 15, attacks will enhance to a higher version.

  • There is a blitz bonus in the last two minutes of a game and every point scored is doubled.

  • There will be random items scattered around the map which you can pick up to gain buffs.

  • If you die, the respawn timer is a fixed 18 seconds (no matter your level).

Map and Environment

  • From first glance, the map looks like your typical MOBA map but it's actually unique. There is no central lane and players will spend most of their time in the 'jungle' area to capture wild Pokemon from the enemy zone. (Right half of the map)

  • There are no towers or turrets in this game, instead the nodes you see on the map are deposit zones for you to drop off your collected wild Pokemon to earn points.

  • The starting base on the left side is where you can go to heal if you are low on HP.

  • The 5 nodes (goals as they call it) on your team's side can also heal you if you stand in them.

  • You can destroyer enemy goals by scoring in them, which will prevent the opposite team from using them for scoring and healing.

More likely than not, the game will be free to play with micro-transactions for Pokemon skins and cosmetics.

Final Thoughts

Although I was more than sceptical at first hearing about a Pokemon MOBA. However, after learning that TiMi is putting in some unique spins to the genre and really focusing on quality gameplay, I've become a fan. I am however worried about the competitiveness of Pokemon Unite compared to games like League of Legends or DOTA, it seems like the level of play is rather limited. Time will tell all, stay tuned for news and updates on Pokemon Unite.
